Panasonic Corp. said on July 17 it has completed construction of a new consumer lithium-ion battery plant within the premises of its existing factory in Suzhou, China.
An inauguration ceremony was held July 16.
The new facility enables integrated production from polar plates to cells and battery packs.
Lithium-ion batteries are expected to find wider applications in a host of new fields, such as storage for solar and other renewable energy sources and as a power source for environmentally friendly vehicles.
It noted growing demand for further cost reductions of consumer batteries used in products such as notebook computers and mobile phones.
Panasonic cited intensified global competition and the impact of currency exchange rates.
To meet demand, Panasonic has set up integrated production systems in its three battery manufacturing bases in China: Suzhou, Wuxi and Beijing.
