Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) shipping line announced July 20 that it has received third-party certification stating that the company reports and discloses data on its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
NYK performed calculations that meet the guidelines of Scope 1, 2 and 3 of the GHG Protocol, the international standards for reporting GHG emissions. This is the first time in the maritime industry that data collection, calculation and reporting on the level of Scope 3 have received certification.
The GHG Protocol deals with emissions from three general sources. Scope 1 of the protocol looks at emissions from sources owned or controlled by a company; Scope 2 at emissions from consumption of purchased energy; and Scope 3 at indirect emissions generated through the company's total supply chain. LRQA Japan provided the certification.
By 2015, NYK aims to reduce CO2 emissions from NYK’s operating vessels by 10 percent compared with 2010. From this fiscal year, NYK began taking steps to monitor and reduce CO2 emissions generated not only when vessels and air freighters are operated as transport means, but also when vessels and air freighters are manufactured, as well as when ship and jet fuels are refined.
