Toshiba Corp. announced on July 25 that it will start mass production of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at its Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corp. plant in Ishikawa Prefecture in October.
The market for white LEDs, which are used for a wide range of functions including general lighting and backlighting televisions, is expected to expand to 1 trillion yen ($12.8 billion) in fiscal 2013.
Toshiba has worked with Bridgelux Inc., a developer of LED lighting technologies, on white LED development since January, using Bridgelux's expertise in crystal growth and LED chip structure to develop a new line of LEDs.
