The working hours of office staff of Fast Retailing Co., operator of the Uniqlo clothing chain, will be moved forward by two hours.
Tadashi Yanai, chairman and president of the company, said the working day of about 2,000 employees at its head office in Yamaguchi and its Tokyo office in Minato Ward will switch from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Sept. 1.
Company officials said the new finishing time was aimed at giving employees more time to study. Fast Retailing plans to make English its official operating language in March 2012 and is trying to encourage employees to brush up their language and other skills.
Workers at Uniqlo shops will not have their hours changed and opening hours will not be affected.
