SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. has asked courts in Japan and Australia to stop sales of Apple Inc.'s new iPhone 4S smartphone, the South Korean firm said Oct. 17.
In its application in Tokyo, Samsung Electronics also asked for a provisional disposition banning sales of Apple's iPhone 4 smartphone and its iPad 2 portable tablet computer.
Samsung Electronics claims that the Apple devices infringe on patents it holds related to communication standards and touch-sensitive panel operational systems.
The South Korean electronics giant also filed for a temporary ruling with courts in France and Italy on Oct. 5 prohibiting iPhone 4S sales in the two countries, shortly after Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S on Oct. 4.
