LAS VEGAS--Toshiba Corp. will launch a 7.7-inch tablet device with an organic electroluminescent (EL) screen this year, the electronics maker said Jan. 8.
A prototype of the device was shown to journalists and will be exhibited at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the world's largest home electronics trade show, which will run from Jan. 10 to Jan. 13.
The organic EL display could deliver higher quality images, reduce weight and allow a thinner body than conventional screens. Toshiba said the new tablet will weigh 350 grams or less and be 8 millimeters thick or less.
"We will provide a wider assortment of tablet devices to accommodate changes in the tablet market," a Toshiba official said.
Toshiba also said it will launch new equipment and services in the United States to optimize power consumption in homes at the end of this year. Smart home systems are designed to cut household power consumption while efficiently using power stored or generated from solar power or other renewable energy sources.
