Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. and four other companies plan to donate a total of $4 million (320 million yen) to TOMODACHI, an initiative led by the U.S. government and a nonprofit organization to support the rebuilding effort after the Great East Japan Earthquake through various exchange programs.
The other four companies are Toyota Motor Corp., Mitsubishi Corp., Hitachi Ltd. and Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. The money will be used to promote exchange programs for young people in Japan and the United States.
In addition to a donation of about $1 million to TOMODACHI, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group is also planning to manage its own exchange program using a different fund.
Plans call for providing students and teachers from the disaster-stricken areas the opportunity to participate in an exchange program in the United States this summer.
One idea for that program is to have participants gain greater knowledge about the financial sector by visiting the offices of Union Bank, based in California, that is a subsidiary of the group. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group plans to bring a group of American students to Japan next year.
