For the eighth consecutive year, Panasonic Corp. obtained more patents in Japan in 2011 than any other company.

The Japan Patent Office said June 29 that Panasonic had 6,881.

Toyota Motor Corp. ranked second with 5,027 patents, followed by Canon Inc. at 4,292, and Toshiba Corp. at 4,042.

All the companies obtained more patents than they did in the previous year.

Sony Corp. and Honda Motor Co. obtained fewer patents than in 2010, and saw their rankings fall.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. obtained 1,303 patents in Japan in 2011, beating all other foreign enterprises for the eighth straight year, since annual statistics became available in 2004.

China topped the United States in 2011 to become, for the first time, the world leader in terms of the total number of applications filed with the five major patent authorities in Japan, the United States, Europe, China and South Korea. Japan ranked third in the same statistics.
