Toyota Motor Corp. will add a gas-electric hybrid version of its iconic Corolla model to its lineup as early as fall 2013, according to a source.
Insiders say that by introducing a hybrid version of the Corolla, Toyota will be able to ramp up sales of its hybrids.
Toyota fully redesigned the Corolla in May, making it smaller for the first time and more fuel efficient. But sales have been disappointing.
Toyota apparently wants to give the Corolla a boost by the introduction of a hybrid.
First introduced in 1966, the Corolla is the top selling nameplate in the world. The Corolla had remained at the top in domestic new car sales for decades, but in recent years it has lagged behind hybrids and minicars.
Toyota had considered adding a hybrid version of the Corolla in the May model change, but the unexpected runaway popularity of the Aqua hybrid subcompact, released late last year, made key hybrid parts for the Corolla unavailable.
