Asahi Glass Co. has developed new easy-to-install glass for office buildings that will help reduce energy consumption.
The new glass is coated with metal membranes and is designed to have a one-centimeter layer of air between itself and an existing glass sheet to help strengthen insulation from the heat and cold.
Asahi Glass said the new panes can reduce annual energy consumption for air conditioning by 30 percent.
To install the glass, workers fit the glass panels into the window sash from the inside. The easy installation allows lower costs and shorter time periods for installation, and there is no need to discard existing glass. Because the panels can also be removed easily, they can be used at rented offices.
Asahi Glass has been conducting final performance checks since June, with 290 panels of the new glass installed at its head office in Tokyo.
Asahi Glass will produce the glass on a dedicated line at its mainstay plant in Ibaraki Prefecture. The company plans to start selling the glass in October.
