Oji Specialty Paper Co. has developed paper for an envelope that masks documents more effectively than conventional paper.

The company said it negates the need to use thicker paper or double up paper sheets to prevent the contents from being seen.

Oji Specialty Paper has already begun selling the new paper to processing firms.

Envelopes made with the paper are expected to hit store shelves in early autumn.

It said the paper has an opacity rate of 99 percent or more, up from the conventional 92 percent.

Oji Specialty Paper produces thin paper for dictionaries and other types of books. It said it used its own technology to develop the opaque paper.
