TENNIS/ Nishikori cracks ATP Top 20

January 31, 2012

Kei Nishikori moved up to 20th from 26th in the ATP world tennis rankings on Jan. 30, once again renewing his own record for the highest ranking in history for a Japanese men's player.

The 22-year-old advanced to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open earlier this month, the first time in 80 years that a Japanese man had made it that far. In 1932, Jiro Sato advanced to the semifinals in Australia.

Nishikori’s previous highest ranking was 24th.

Serb Novak Djokovic, who won the Australian Open, maintained the top position in the men's rankings, while Victoria Azarenka of Belarus moved into first place in the women's rankings after also winning the recent Grand Slam event in Melbourne.
