Japanese gymnasts at this summer's London Olympics will be wearing uniforms emblazoned with a stylized version of the rising sun.
Created by designer Hiroko Koshino, the new uniforms symbolize the dynamism of the rising sun and the beauty of the brilliance at dawn, officials said.
“I want to perform with energy and power as strong as the sun,” said women's national team gymnast Rie Tanaka at an unveiling event in Sendai on May 11.
The event was held in Sendai as part of the Japan Gymnastic Association’s activities to support reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Gymnasts were joined by fencers, trampolinists and other athletes in a separate program in Shichigahama, Miyagi Prefecture, to encourage elementary school students in disaster areas.
“I will be happy if you feel courage and excitement from my performance,” gymnast Kohei Uchimura told the kids.
The students presented the Olympic athletes with a Hinomaru flag on which messages such as “Ganbare Nippon!” (Hang in there, Japan) were written. The Olympic team plans to bring it to London.
