FORT MYERS, Florida -- Boston Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka on Oct. 3 played catch for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in June.
"I've been waiting for this day for a long time," the 31-year-old former Seibu Lions pitcher said at the Red Sox training facility in Fort Myers, Florida. "I didn't know how to throw the first pitch."
Matsuzaka started throwing about 9 meters and extended the distance to about 15 meters. He threw 39 pitches in total.
"I'm relieved I feel no pain after playing catch," he said.
His rehabilitation will continue here until November, including playing catch every other day.
Matsuzaka is expected to return to the team toward the end of the 2012 season.
"I think fans are looking forward to see me pitching from the mound. That's the next stage," he said.
