SOCCER / Japan loses to Uzbekistan 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

Forward Aleksandr Shadrin netted the only goal of the game as Uzbekistan defeated Japan 1-0 at Toyota Stadium in a third-round World Cup qualifying match on Feb. 29.

This was only Japan's second loss since Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni took the helm of the team in 2010.

Japan advanced to the final qualifier as Group C runner-up with 10 points while the Uzbeks extended their point total to 16.

The final Asian qualifiers for the 2014 Brazil World Cup will kick off in June.
