A ceremony marking the promotion of sumo wrestler Harumafuji to the highest-ranked yokozuna, or grand champion, was held in the Meijijingu shrine in Tokyo on Sept. 28.
He received a letter of recommendation for the new rank from the chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, Kitanoumi.
Harumafuji performed his first-ever dohyoiri in the shiranui style. Dohyoiri is a ring-entering ceremony.
"I aimed to carry out a beautiful dohyoiri," he said.
Mongolian wrestler Harumafuji became the 70th yokozuna after winning two grand sumo tournaments in a row. They were held in July and September.
Harumafuji then reflected on his status as yokozuna.
"I will do my best, with all my heart," he said.
