HANDBALL / S. Korea beats Japan out of Olympic spot

November 02, 2011

Japan men's handball team failed to secure a spot for the London Olympics after losing to South Korea 26-21 in the finals of the Asian qualifying round in Seoul on Nov. 2.

South Korea punched its ticket to the 2012 Games while Japan, which is trying to make it to its first Olympics since 1988, will participate in the world final qualifiers in April for a spot in London.

In the 12-team world final qualifiers, the top two teams will qualify in each four-team group.

After defeating South Korea in the 1990 Goodwill Games, Japan has been winless against its neighboring rival in 27 games -- 25 losses and two draws.
