YOKOHAMA -- American Justin Burrell was named Most Valuable Player in Japan's professional basketball league on May 3.

The 24-year-old former St. John's University forward, a first-year pro, averaged 18.7 points per game in helping the expansion Yokohama B-Corsairs to a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference with a 31-21 record.

Burrell said the award was an honor and he was "so happy to bring this award to an up-and-coming franchise like the B-Corsairs."

The team's American coach Reggie Geary, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs between 1996 and 1998, picked up coach of the year honors.
