Okinawa returns to Japanese sovereignty 27 years after end of World War II

Okinawa, under U.S. control since the end of World War II, is returned to Japanese sovereignty. Ceremonies are held in Tokyo and Naha to mark the hand-over.

However, little progress has been made, leading to greater criticism of the Japanese government among Okinawa residents.
